This is the baby boy alleged to have been murdered in a flat in Preston.

The image shows tiny Aiden Jonathan Gary Cairns, who was born on February 18 last year weighing 7lb 11oz, sleeping peacefully in his hospital cot at the Royal Preston Hospital.

Tragically, just 13 months later, the tot was pronounced dead at the very same hospital, prompting a murder probe.

Paramedics were called to a report of a baby suffering a possible cardiac or respiratory problems in a flat on Church Street at 6.51am last Saturday.

Aiden’s mother, named locally as Tasha Hough, 25, from Ribbleton, and father Liam Cairns, 25, who is understood to have lived at the flat but comes from the Grange area of the city, are both being quizzed by detectives from Lancashire Police’s Force Major Incident Team.

Police officers were granted a 12-hour extension to question them on suspicion of murder on Friday.

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said: “At 6.51am we were called to Church Street in Preston.

“The police were contacted and it is now a police investigation.

“The patient was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital.”

- A couple who were quizzed about the death of a 13-month-old boy in Preston have been released on bail.

Police say the man and woman, both aged 25, were released by late on Friday “pending further enquiries.”

Toddler Aiden Jonathan Gary Cairns was pronounced dead in hospital the previous Saturday after being rushed there by ambulance from an address in Church Street.

Paramedics summoned police after answering an early morning 999 call to a flat in the city centre and finding the child was not breathing.

The couple were arrested five days later on suspicion of murder. A spokesman for Lancashire Police said: “An investigation continues into the circumstances and the death is being treated as unexplained.

“A post mortem examination has been carried out but the exact cause of death is unascertained at this stage.”
