Parties and parks will mark Queen’s Jubilee

Celebrations are planned across Lancashire to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
County Hall bosses have set out a series of possible events and projects to mark the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne in 1952.
Council bosses have suggested a budget of £60,000 which equates to £1,000 for every year of the Queen’s reign, to cover a series of special events and activities.
Among the ideas to be considered at the County Council’s Cabinet meeting tomorrow, is a plan to protect outdoor recreational sites. The Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge is aimed at protecting 2012 outdoor recreational spaces across the country ‘with a target for Lancashire of 14 new sites’. They are also considering getting involved in The Woodland Trust’s Diamond Jubilee Woods programme which could see the creation of a new wood on a 60-acre site in the county.
It is also expected a series of street parties will take place during the bank holiday weekend of June 2 to 5, with a focus on community groups.
The Cabinet agenda report, stated: “The county council’s schools, residential care homes, cultural and community centres will be encouraged to initiate their own celebratory events and the libraries and archives will be making supporting information available.
“Advice from the Secretary of State to local authorities regarding street parties will be made widely available.”
South Ribble Council has already received one application for a street party, while West Lancashire Council has had a number enquiries but not yet received any official applications. Preston Council is not understood to have received any enquiries about Jubilee street parties but its applications for Guild parties have opened.
A spokesman for Fylde Council said it expected to receive requests for street parties in the coming months.
Meanwhile, the county’s Arts Development Team has begun researching the possibility of a public arts project.
