Pay deal: Staff call off strike

Hundreds of staff at a Bamber Bridge firm have suspended a strike which was called in protest at a new pay deal.

Hourly paid workers at boiler maker Baxi's factory on Club Street were unhappy at the conditions of the deal which would see them them paid monthly rather than weekly.

Furthermore workers could be dragged before a disciplinary hearing if they have more than a week off work.

A walk-out had been due on Tuesday but was suspended pending the outcome of a ballot.

Manufacturing director Chris Tyrer confirmed the strike had been called off after talks with union officials.

He said: "We are hopeful we can resolve the issues quickly and get back to what we do best – manufacturing high quality boilers for the UK."

Speaking last week, before the decision to postpone the strike was taken, Steve Salisbury, the site convener for trade union Unite, said feelings among the workforce were running high.
