Petition plea over danger junction

Residents on a Leyland road have signed a petition calling for motorists to stop parking at a notorious accident blackspot junction.

The campaign comes after locals on Stanifield Close in Farington have been involved in a series of bumps and near-misses when joining the main Stanifield Lane road.

They claim inconsiderate drivers are parking so close to the corners of the busy junction that they are making it impossible to see oncoming traffic.

Lancashire Local South Ribble Committee met last Thursday to discuss the problems and heard how people wanted the limited waiting parking bays on Stanifield Lane to be shortened away from the corner.

Meanwhile, County Hall highways officials were also urged to introduce yellow lines at the end of Stanifield Close on both sides of the road for a distance of 14 metres.

County coun Mike Otter helped set up the petition and found that 18 out of the nearby 20 homeowners were in favour of the restrictions to stop drivers parking there.

He said: "This has been a problem for two years and I have spoken to locals about it.

"The residents are worried about their views of Stanifield Lane when they are pulling out of the junction.

"It all came about after one woman got hit by an oncoming car. You could say that it is only a matter of time before someone gets injured.

"Hopefully it will mean that drivers will have greater visibility and it will reduce the risk of collisions."

Coun Otter also confirmed that similar plans will be considered by the Lancashire Local committee for neighbouring Kew Gardens.

Harold Bilsborough, 80, who has lived on the close for more than 30 years, signed the petition.

He said: "I am frightened when I drive my car as there are lots of large vans, trucks and lorries parked on the corners of the road.

"Sometimes you cannot see the traffic and I often turn left on to the road to go the long way to Leyland because I don't want to have an accident.

"We signed the petition because they wanted to put double yellow lines down Stanifield Close for approximately 20 yards, but that would mean more people parking outside our houses.

"I just hope they make our road safer."
