Pressure mounts in waste site row

Controversial: The 320m Farington Waste Centre

A controversial waste site could by hit with massive financial penalties after causing a stink among residents.

The Farington Waste Recovery Park, on Sustainability Way, has been blamed for producing awful smells and plumes of steam in the last few weeks.

Hundreds of people have contacted the Environment Agency and more than 80 people have now contacted South Ribble Borough Council to vent their anger.

Now, it has emerged site owners Global Renewables have been warned they could be hit with penalties of around £2,000-an-hour for not complying with environmental standards.

The waste centre, a joint initiative between Lancashire County Council and Global Renewables, opened last year amid a storm of controversy.

The smells have been blamed on a technical fault with the air filtration system.

Tim Carter, whose Bispham Avenue home overlooks the facility, said: “It is absolutely right that Global Renewables are hit with harsh penalties for this.

“When they were trying to get this thing built they promised that there would be no smells.

“They admitted they hadn’t always got it right at other facilities in the past but they assured everyone that this time would be different. They gambled with people’s welfare and they should be hammered as hard as they can be.”

A spokesman for Global Renewables Limited said: “We are aware of residents’ concerns and are doing everything we can to resolve the matter as well as working to put in place measures to ensure this doesn’t happen again. We will keep them up to date on the progress.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council would not confirm how much the couple could face paying in penalties – but said there was no cap on the amount.

Dick Ellis, Waste PFI Project Director, said: “The contract we have in place with Global Renewables Limited allows for deductions to be made according to a range of performance measures.”
