Probe after lamb found mauled to death in Worden Park

Worden Park, Leyland

Worden Park, Leyland

Police in Leyland are investigating whether dogs could be behind a savage attack on a lamb in Worden Park.

A dog walker made the grim discovery of a lamb which had been savagely attacked in Brickfield Wood, on the west of the park, towards Royal Avenue, on Monday.

The dead lamb had injuries to its back legs.

The dog walker, who did not wish to be named, said he had previously seen a group of youths with dogs playing in that area of the park.

He said: “It was quite alarming.

“The lamb had been pulled apart. I reported it to the park wardens, who collected it and told the police. I have now been told the police’s wildlife officer is investigating.”

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said they received a call on Tuesday morning, after the animal had been found at around 10pm the previous day.

They said: “We were alerted the following day by a park warden that a dead lamb had been found in Worden Park.

“A dog walker had found it and had also seen a group of youths throwing something around the same time.

“There were rear leg lacerations to the animal, and we are looking into the possibility that a dog might have bitten it.

“We are looking into a number of enquiries and it is possible that it might have happened within a couple of days.”

Coun Peter Mullineaux, South Ribble Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for Neighbourhood Services, said: “Responding to a call from a resident, we removed a dead lamb from the Ruin Wood area of Worden Park.

“It had a bite mark on one of its legs, which I believe was most likely caused by a wild animal.

“We reported it to the police, and I would ask anyone who may have information about this to contact them.”
