Rapist is locked up

A brutal rapist from Bamber Bridge has been jailed for attacking a 14-year-old girl in Leyland.

John Fishwick, 27, of Princess Street, was locked up for nine years when he appeared at Burnley Crown Court.

As well as an eight-year sentence for rape, he was also ordered to spend an extra 12 months behind bars for sex offences against children.

His victim, who is now 15, said afterwards she would never get over what happened and would like to see her attacker spend the rest of his life locked up.

She said: "I'm happy he's been jailed, but he should be spending a lot longer behind bars.

"If I had not spoken out he would never have come to justice. I'm glad I had the courage to speak up.

"But this sentence has not given me closure. It's still in my head and will never end."

A 17-year-old, who was sexually assaulted by Fishwick, said: "All the way through the trial I was so scared. And even after he was locked up I thought he was following me.

"I felt like I couldn't be myself. But now I know he can't get to me any more."

The six attacks were all carried out on the girls between 2001 and 2006 at an address in Leyland.

Following a week-long trial at Preston Crown Court in May, Fishwick was convicted by a jury of one count of rape, three counts of sexual activity with a child under 16 and three counts of inciting a child under 16 to commit a sexual activity.

He was found not guilty of all charges relating to a third teenage girl.

During the trial his victims were forced to re-live the harrowing details of the attacks carried out against them and faced cross-examination by his defence counsel.

Fishwick is also banned from any contact with under 16s and has been ordered to sign the Sex Offender's Register for life.
