Refusal is appealed

Bretherton Terrace, Leyland

Plans to build houses on open space in Leyland have resurfaced, causing anger in the community.

An application for 14 houses opposite Bretherton Terrace was turned down by South Ribble Council because to grant permission would mean ‘the loss of an area of public open space’.

But applicant DKH Developments Ltd has appealed the refusal, and the decision now lies with a planning inspector from out of the area.

Coun Caleb Tomlinson, who represents the residents of Leyland Central, is furious that the project could now go ahead.

He said: “This would have a massive effect on people’s lives, and it annoys me that someone from out of the area is left with making the decision over this.

“The land isn’t used by walkers or children, but it’s important to the community because it acts as a noise and pollution buffer from traffic for those living in Bretherton Terrace.

“It’s fenced off now and there’s a sign up saying that it’s reserved for future development, and the residents are very upset about it.”

He added: “It attracts a lot of wildlife too, and all of that will disappear if the land is levelled and houses are built there.

“I’m 100 per cent against these plans.”

Letters of objection and a petition were initially sent to the council from residents on Turpin Green Lane, Bretherton Terrace and Balcarras Road against the plans.

A planning inspector is set to visit the site this month, and has agreed to meet Coun Tomlinson to discuss the issue.
