The discovery of retro Nintendo computer games at a South Ribble charity shop has raised more than £1,500 for Age Concern – thanks to the efforts of an eagle-eyed member of staff.

The ‘Game and Watch’ titles had been placed on the shelves of the shop in Lostock Hall for just 99p each.

But when retail manager Lesley Baldwin spotted the seven games, still in their original boxes complete with instructions, she thought they might be worth a little bit more.

Lesley, 43, suspected the video games might be valuable due to the current fascination with 1980s versions and decided to put them on eBay.

Her quick thinking saw the treasures net a whopping £1,583.08 for the charity, following a seven-day whirlwind bidding war from buyers desperate to add them to their collections.

Lesley, from Lostock Hall, said: “I don’t think they had been out long at all, just a couple of days.

“It’s part and parcel of the job to look out for items of interest.”

Within a day of going online, the games had clocked up £172 in bids.

Lesley said: “There were quite a lot of questions and interest from people who wanted to ‘buy it now’, but we declined in order to let the auction run its course.”
