River pollution kills fish

Hundreds of fish have died in the River Lostock at Leyland following pollution, the Environment Agency has warned.

A concerned member of the public contacted the agency on Monday (September 1) to report dead fish on the water surface at Schleswig Way, Leyland.

Environment officers came to the scene and found the pollution was very similar to that of earlier incidents this year.

They have asked the public to be vigilant and report any pollution in case it continues.

Dave Fleming, environment management team leader for the Environment Agency, said: "This pollution has been reoccurring every six weeks over the last few months, but this is the worst case we have seen so far. Despite our ongoing investigations, we have not yet been able to find the cause for this.

"The area is mainly residential and we believe it may be possible that the pollution is coming from the surface water drainage system. We are appealing to the public to help us find the cause so that we can put a stop to it and prevent any more damage to the river.

"We're asking people to check the connections from their toilets and washing machines, especially in newly built houses to make sure that they are connected to a foul sewer and not one that is going to a

river."

Anyone information on this incident, or anyone who spots anything suspicious should report them to the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60.
