Preparations are underway to mark the centenary of the First World War - and residents are being called upon to help with the commomorations.

South Ribble Council wants to get residents involved in planning a whole range of commemorative events and is taking a consultation roadshow around the borough throughout March and early April.

Plans for the anniversary are still in their early stages, but a wide range of projects and event ideas are already being developed.

Over the coming weeks, the council will be asking residents how they would like to get involved in local commemorative events and what they think of the plans for a borough memorial.

The consultation will be run in conjunction with the forthcoming My Neighbourhood Forum meetings, where residents are invited to drop in to discuss community projects, events and activities.

South Ribble Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Coun Alan Ogilvie, said: “The centenary of the First World War is obviously a major event for all of us, but it is particularly important here in South Ribble due to the contribution that our communities made both on the frontline and supporting industry on the home front.

“We want to hear from our local community groups and individual members of the public about their plans and ideas.

“One of the community projects the council is involved with is called ‘Our Lives’ and will tell the story of how the war affected people of the borough.

“We’d like to hear from anyone who has pictures, stories or memorabilia they think would contribute to the project.

“It is extremely important that we take time to remember those who served in the armed forces and their families, and to commemorate the anniversary of the conflict in an appropriate and thoughtful way.”

The forum meetings all take place from 7pm to 8pm and are as follows:

Western Parishes, Monday 10th March at Hutton Village Hall

Eastern, Thursday 13th March at Bamber Bridge Methodist Church

Central, Tuesday 25th March at Farington St. Paul’s Church Hall

Leyland, Thursday 27th March at Civic Centre, Leyland

Penwortham, Thursday 3rd April at St Mary’s Church, Church Avenue, Penwortham
