Row puts school site merger in jeopardy

Plans to merge two departments of a primary school in South Ribble could be scuppered because residents cannot agree on road safety measures.

Lostock Hall Primary School has been given permission to move its infants department to new accommodation on its Linden Drive site.

The 400-pupil school is currently split on two sites, with infants and nursery children based in an ageing building on Avondale Drive.

Planning permission was granted on condition that traffic calming measures were installed to make the area safer for children and parents.

But proposals for safety improvements have already been dropped once because of problems agreeing on a way of introducing a 20mph zone outside the school.

Residents claim the extra traffic travelling to the new school building will cause a traffic nightmare.

Now the county council hopes a scheme of speed humps, waiting restrictions and lay-bys will satisfy local people.
