Runshaw College’s principal has announced she will be retiring this summer after more than four years in the job.

Kathy Passant started at the Langdale Road campus as a senior manager 13 years ago, and worked her way up the ranks.

Now, she has decided to join her husband Rod in retirement, and will leave the college this year.

Looking back at her time there, she said: “I will miss working in such a joyous place.

“I’ve loved working with the staff and the students, and I will miss that day-to-day contact.

“There is always such a buzz about the place.

“I remember one of the students once saying to me that I was really lucky to have the best job in the world, which I thought was lovely, and I think he was right.”

Mum-of-two Kathy, age 55, from Buckshaw Village, has also seen many changes at the college during her time there.

“It has really been a time of rapid growth,” she said.

“The results have improved year on year, and there has also been a big increase in the services and facilities for students at the college.

“In the last few years there has been renovation work taking place on the student services area, the restaurants, library and IT suites, so I think the college is in a really strong position.”

The principal’s job will be advertised from Friday, January 11, and interviews are expected to take place in February.

Kathy said: “The staff make the college strong, so I’m very confident the college will continue to do well once I leave.

“It’s doing well financially too.

“I think there are challenges to most sixth form colleges generally, because times are always changing, but Runshaw has learnt to adapt to those changes.

“I’ve thought carefully about leaving, and I will be very sad to go.

“But my husband retired a few years ago and I want to join him; it’s the right time for me now.”

She added that whoever replaces her will be given a “wonderful opportunity”.
