A 52-year-old head teacher from Leyland has pleaded ‘not guilty’ to historic sex offences involving a pupil.

James Alexander Bird, of Acorn Close, indicated not guilty pleas to four charges of gross indecency with a boy under the age of 16 in Accrington in 2003, when he appeared at court in Blackburn.

He was bailed to appear at Burnley Crown Court on May 6.

When Bird was charged he was suspended from his job as head of Newton Bluecoat CE Primary School near Preston.
