Seeing stars in hygiene rating system

Leyland’s restaurants and takeaways have been put under the microscope in the latest round of food hygiene inspections.
Twelve of the town’s eateries scored poorly with one or two-star ratings, meaning that ‘improvement is necessary’, while no establishments were handed the dreaded zero rating, which means ‘urgent improvement is necessary’.
The latest figures come a year after South Ribble Council started publishing the results on the Food Standards Agency website, to give people an opportunity to check out how their favourite place fared, and make an informed decision before eating out in the town.
Three takeaways in Leyland were given one-star ratings – Ranners Rolls on Stanley Road in Farington, Mr Chicken, on Leyland Lane, and Hough Lane Chippy, on Hough Lane.
One hotel, Wellington Park on Church Road, was also given the low score, although the restaurant has recently been refurbished, and a new inspection is to take place soon.
Zubar Asif, the man in charge of Mr Chicken, said: “The business has changed hands since the last inspection (October 2011), so I will get in touch with the council and ask for a re-inspection.” Hough Lane Chippy is also under new management, from this week.
In the two-star category, one takeaway owner said the result was unfair.
Rittorio Ursitti, manager of Giulio’s on Towngate, said: “The inspector complained about the floor tiles needing a clean, but the food is still okay.
“It’s nothing major, and I have taken it on board.
“The tiles do get cleaned, but it’s not always easy, and he found a bit of dirt in the corners.
“I don’t think it’s a fair rating, but the main thing is that the food is 100 per cent.”
Other establishments in the below average categories either declined to comment to the Guardian, or were unavailable for comment.
Other places which serve food were also put under the spotlight in the inspections, including schools, pubs, market stalls and supermarkets, and all fared well under the scheme.
