Acts aged 10 to 70 entertained in Leyland on Friday for South Ribble Council’s annual Search for a Star contest.

Singing duo Elle Mercer and Annabel Pike were announced the winners at the final, held at the Civic Centre - and couldn’t believe it.

Mayor Dorothy Gardner said: “They were so surprised when they won, their faces were a picture!”

The 16-year-olds, from Balshaw’s CE High School, performed Radioactive by rock band Imagine Dragons, and Little Talks by indie rock band Of Monsters and Men.

Leyland youngster Millie-Mae Hill came runner-up and singer Taylor Green came in third position.

Each won cash prizes along with the prestigious titles.

Coun Gardner added: “Some of the acts were absolutely fantastic, they really put their hearts and souls into the performances.

“It was such an entertaining evening, with stand-up comedy and musical acts, and everyone really enjoyed it.

“The audience was joining in with the singing too. It was great.”

Coun Gardner judged the heats of the competition, but admitted she was glad to be a regular spectator this time round as making a decision on the winners would have been ‘far too difficult’.
