‘Smell hell’ waste firm bids to end residents’ nightmare

A new team has been brought in to tackle smells at a Leyland waste plant – as it has been revealed more than £1.2m has been pumped into trying to plug the problem.
The £320m Farington Waste Technology Park, on Sustainability Way, has been plagued by complaints from residents over bad smells for more than a year.
Bosses at Global Renewables, which runs the joint venture with Lancashire County Council, say it has undergone a management restructure to focus efforts on dealing with the problem.
The changes will mean a new general manager, Greg Spetch, overseeing the plant on a day-to-day basis, and project director Paul Lonsdale, who with a team will specifically tackle the smells.
These responsibilities have been transferred from CEO David Brewer, who will focus on the “longer term business strategy” for the company.
