‘When will flood issue be sorted?’
Floods at Farington.
Residents living in Farington are calling for work to be done to prevent flooding in their streets.
When downpours hit South Ribble a couple of weeks ago, Leyland was the worst-hit area in the borough, with rivers running through parts of Farington and the town’s Worden Park.
Now, people are urging Lancashire County Council to help stop the problem occurring again.
Coun Mike Otter, who represents Farington East, said: “The county council and United Utilities did some work on the drains in Stanifield Lane earlier this year, because that used to flood a lot too.
“It seems to have worked well, but people living in other areas of Farington need something doing where they live now.
“The places which were really badly hit in recent weeks were Bashall Grove, Stanley Avenue, Fowler Avenue, and Highfield Avenue.
“Some houses were flooded, and a lot of people said the water had come right up to the front doors, so it is an issue.”
He said LCC, United Utilities, South Ribble Council and the Environment Agency are all aware of the problem areas.
Andrew Burrows, Public Realm Manager at LCC, said: “Many parts of South Ribble were badly affected during the unusually heavy rainfall in June, with roads in Leyland and Farington amongst the worst locations.
“We had some warning of potential heavy rainfall from the Met Office, which allowed us to clean out our highway drainage systems in the most vulnerable locations in advance of the worst rainfall.
“County council staff were called out to address issues at various locations throughout the night, to clear blockages and to close roads where necessary for public safety.”
He added: “We are always looking to improve the way we prepare for incidents and will be using information gathered during the floods to help us to determine which areas to focus on if we experience similar weather conditions.
“We will continue to work closely with South Ribble Borough Council, the Environment Agency, United Utilities and all our partners to deal with flooding, and where practical, to look where it may be possible to improve drainage systems in the future to reduce flooding across the area.”
