Woman savaged by pet dog
A woman needed emergency surgery to her face after she was savaged by her pet dog.
Susan Martin, 47, suffered 'horrific' injuries after the greyhound attacked her at her home on Glendale Crescent in Lostock Hall in the early hours of last Tuesday morning.
She was rushed to hospital by ambulance where she needed surgery on the wound on her right cheek.
A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said that he had seen Mrs Martin with the dog, which was destroyed after the incident, but had never expected it to turn.
He said: "It always seemed quite a placid animal whenever I saw it, I guess it goes to show that you cannot tell what they might do.
"I think it was a rescue dog, so you do not know what had happened to it before they got it.
"I only heard about what happened afterwards and I think we all hope she recovers from her injuries quickly."
A spokesman for Lancashire Police confirmed it had been called to the home by the North West Ambulance Service shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
She said: "A pet greyhound had turned on its 47-year-old owner and bitten her several times on the face.
"She sustained horrific facial injuries which will require surgery and she was taken to Royal Preston Hospital for treatment.
"The dog was destroyed with the owner's consent."
A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service confirmed it had attended the incident at 12.10am on Tuesday and taken a woman to hospital suffering "severe facial wounds."
She added: "The hospital was put on standby before the ambulance arrived due to the serious nature of the injuries."
Mrs Martin declined to comment on the incident.
