Delighted: Chris Catterall believes the new Academy status will help them continue their success

Worden Sports College is set to become the first academy in Leyland.

It is set to be called Academy@Worden and headteacher Chris Catterall admits that it is an ‘academy by choice’.

The news comes just months after Worden was rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted and the only local school to have 100 per cent A*-C GCSE pass rate.

Staff, pupils and governors are overjoyed to be joining an elite band of schools rated good or better that have succeeded in applying to become an academy.

Mr Catherall said: “Becoming an academy would allow Worden to continue with the success it has already enjoyed.

“From the best wishes it had already received it would serve to strengthen partnerships with commerce, South Ribble Borough Council, UCLAN and the many community organisations working within Leyland.

“This is a great leap forward for Worden and is proof of the commitment of the staff and governors to the pupils and a successful long term future in Leyland in the 21st century.”

Lorraine Fullbrook, MP for South Ribble, said: “I am so delighted that Academy@Worden has finally come about.

“It has been one of my greatest pleasures as the Member of Parliament for South Ribble to help the fantastic headteacher Chris Catherall and his amazing team make this happen.

“The academy status of this wonderful school will only make it better than it already is – and it’s already fantastic.

“From the pupils who attend this school. It’s teaching staff, it’s senior team and governing body are a true credit and real inspiration to educating the young people of Leyland and with Academy @ Worden, the future for these fantastic young people who currently attend this school, and the many who will follow in their footsteps, believe me, their future is extremely bright.

“I have loved every minute of being involved with them and I am extremely honoured to have been asked to be a Trustee, which I didn’t hesitate to accept. “We have all worked very hard as a great team to bring this about and Academy@Worden will only soar forward for every one connected with the school and for the wider community.

“I really am so pleased, as they absolutely deserve it.

“It is fantastic that Leyland has this calibre of young people, teaching staff, the governing body and fantastic facilities available to educate our children – and I am looking forward to the party to celebrate with them.”
