Work has started to bring a multi-million pound wastewater treatment facility to Leyland.

United Utilities gained planning permission for the Leyland Wastewater Treatment Works off Emnie Lane late last year, and now, they have moved onto the site to start building work.

An odour control plant and thickened sludge storage tank are just some of the facilities being built at the former fish farm.

The fish farm used to belong to the Environment Agency but was closed down two years ago.

Geraud Ramond, project manager for United Utilities, said: “We have begun constructing this £4 million project to upgrade wastewater treatment at Leyland.

“We are installing new equipment, including specialist technology which reduces ammonia levels, to ensure the treated wastewater we put back into the River Lostock is of an even higher quality.

“This is great news for the environment as it means a much healthier river for fish, plants and other wildlife.”

He added: “We plan to use the footprint of a former fish farm on the site to build our new sludge treatment process.

“Sludge is the residue left over after wastewater has been treated, and it’s often used as an agricultural fertiliser.

“New equipment will make the sludge drier and of better quality, which means it will be a better product for farmers, and require less tankers to transport.”

During a consultation process before planning permission was granted, the highways department raised concerns that the new facility would effect the public footpaths surrounding the area, but no objections were put forward by members of the public.

The work is scheduled to be finished by December this year.
