‘Yarn bombing’ town’s landmarks

A wool shop owner is getting down to the knitty gritty of raising the profile of her favourite past time - by creating huge tea cosies for Leyland’s landmarks.
Linda Simmons, 53, is “yarn bombing” parts of the town in a bid to raise the profile of knitting, which is commonly seen as a past time for older people.
She is hoping younger residents will each knit their own part of a huge piece of wool to decorate a huge truck that will be a float in the Leyland festival in July.
In a bid to attract attention to her cause from visitors and residents in the town, the determined grandmother is yarn bombing the Leyland Motors statue at the front of the market on Hough Lane, and the front of Wetherspoons Leyland Lion pub in a bid to recruit locals to help her in her next mission.
For Mrs Simmons, who owns Knitting Heaven Wool Shop on Golden Hill Lane, is aiming to knit a huge tea cosy to cover the float.
She is appealing to the towns’ folk to knit a square each that can be combined to decorate the huge float.
The mum of three is hoping to share her purls of wisdom with the younger generation and encourage them to embrace knitting as a fashionable past time.
She said: “I want to bring attention to the fact knitting is back in vogue.
“We want to encourage everyone to get outside in the fresh air and knit.
“We need to encourage the craft. There’s a preconception about knitting that it’s just to make things for babies and old people but it is actually very fashionable at the moment among designers.
“We are also appealing to people to help us yarn bomb the float by knitting a little square each. We can teach people how to knit.”
Linda, who has one grandchild, is also appealing for people to donate their old woolly jumpers to be lovingly unravelled and knitted again to form part of the float’s decorations.
