Freak rainfall has been blamed for month-long delays to bridge repairs in Croston.

Highways bosses say they have fallen behind on work on the A581 Meadow Lane because of the wettest summer in 100 years - meaning continued road closures and diversions for residents and businesses.

Work started on a £750,000 project to strengthen the Great Hanging Bridge and Little Hanging Bridge in June but heavy rain and flooding in September stopped repair work.

Croston parish councillor Kath Almond said: “The closure of the road from June to October – and now extended – has meant the village has been littered with diversion and road closure signs.

“The good side to this has been less HGVs going through the village, but local businesses have suffered a loss in passing trade.”

Alan Capstick, highways manager for Chorley, said: “We’re sorry we’re running a bit late and for the added inconvenience to residents and businesses.

“Croston was affected more than most places by the very high rainfall we’ve experienced this summer, and the flooding to the village also delayed our work by a number of weeks.

“When we planned the scheme we allowed a good amount of time for any likely delays and were still on track to reopen the road on schedule before the September flooding. But the heavy rainfall and extremely high water levels meant we simply couldn’t access the bridges to finish the work to the original deadline.”

It’s not all bad news for villagers, who still managed to win a Silver Gilt in the ‘Large Village’ class in this year’s North West in Bloom.

Diversions will stay in place, taking traffic via Bretherton, until November 30.
