‘Be vigilant - there are thieves around’.

That is the message from police in Leyland as they renew their pleas to cyclists after a rise in bike thefts.

As revealed in last week’s week’s Guardian, 25 bikes have been taken from locations in the town centre in the last six weeks, including outside Tesco on Towngate, outside Leyland Library, on Lancastergate, and in Farington Moss.

Insp Steve Evans, of Leyland Police, said: “Bike thefts are a problem for us at the moment. People should make sure they keep their bikes locked and should be vigilant, because there are thieves about.

“Our advice to people is that if you have got a lock, use it to lock it to a fixed structure, like a bike rack. Bikes are being targeted at the moment and we need people to be aware of that, to stop them from falling victim to it.”

Cycle stamping will be available from Morrisons on Golden Hill Lane on August 25.
