A Leyland high school is not making enough progress to bring it out of special measures, Ofsted has revealed.
Wellfield Business and Enterprise College, on Yewlands Drive, was put into special measures in the summer after watchdog Ofsted said that no aspect of life at the school met required standards.
And in a recently published report of the first monitoring inspection, which took place in December, it has been revealed that the school still isn’t doing enough.
It recognises the statement of action and the school’s development plan are fit for purpose, but that GCSE results are below the national average.
Improvements have been made in the quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils and the quality of leadership and management of the school, but GCSE results show that the rate of improvement in the achievements of students ‘is not fast enough to overcome the legacy of underachievement’.
Headteacher Piers Tolson said: “The big sticking point for us in the summer was the achievements and the exam results, and that’s also the hardest thing to turn around.
“The report outlines that there are improvements in the teaching, management of the school and behaviour of pupils, and all that will lead to better achievements, but that will only happen over time.
“We can’t turn that around as quickly.”
He added: “I’ve been up-front and honest with parents and have written a letter to them about the latest inspection.
“The report recognises the progress we are making, but the results are still holding us back, and at the moment we do not have enough evidence to show that there is enough progress where achievement is concerned.
“We are due more exam results this month, so I’m hopeful they will be better.”
He said the behaviour issue was a big shock from last year’s initial report.
And Ofsted states that the school’s new behaviour policy, implemented in September, has made a big difference.
School records now show a reduction in the number of incidents of bullying and disruptive behaviour, and there is now a high staff presence around the school at the changeover of lessons and during break times.
