Leyland town centre’s Post Office is set to move location for the second time in four years.

Plans have been announced to relocate the facility from its current location on Hough Lane to an empty toy shop across the road.

If it goes ahead, the move will mean the opening hours will be extended by over 20 hours a week, and it will have a ‘modern open-plan retail

environment’.

The Post Office was originally based in what is now the Leyland Lion Wetherspoons pub on Hough Lane, along with the Spar, but moved across the road in 2009.

The former Hyde’s toy shop, which is where the Post Office could be moved to next year, quit the town in 2011, and the premise has been for sale ever since.

A spokesman for the Post Office said: “The Post Office is proposing to move its Leyland office from its current location to create a new style open-plan branch, with significantly extended opening hours for

customers.

“The new Leyland Post Office would have a mixture of one traditional screened counter position, two open-plan and a serving point at the retail counter - a new concept for delivering services.”

Opening times at the proposed new location would be 8.30am until 6pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am until 6pm on Sundays, compared to the current hours of 9am until 5.30pm midweek, 9am until 1pm on Saturdays, and being closed on Sundays.

It is not yet known if the proposed expansion and new hours will create more jobs.

The proposals are now being put the public to gauge their views.

The consultation will close on December 18, and submissions can be made via email to comments@postoffice.co.uk, or via the customer helpline on 08457 22 33 44.
