A military bomb discovered by a metal detector in Preston has exploded.

Police were called to a field near Avenham Park this evening (Saturday) to reports that two people with a metal detector had discovered an old three inch HE military mortar.

A ‘controlled explosion’ has now been carried out by experts after police warned the device could potentially be ‘live and very dangerous’.

Access to Avenham Park has been restricted as a 100m cordon was set up around the site.

Sgt Paul McLarnon said: “It looks like the bomb had been there for some time; there was some corrosion on it.

“Two people were using a metal detector and got a signal from the metal from the ground.

“They exposed the item and did the right thing by calling us immediately.”
