A Chorley business has had its work showcased to millions of people.
The Chorley Cake Centre, in Cowling Brow, has been making cakes for 30 years and the appropriately named Joanne Baker is about to celebrate her 20th anniversary at the helm.
Such is the popularity of her work it’s been used on TV programmes including Shameless and Cutting It.
Joanne took on the cake shop when she was just 21 and recently made a cake to mark the Chorley Guardian’s 140th birthday celebrations, which was subsequently donated to Derian House children’s hospice.
Joanne, 40, said: “I will always take on a challenge, no matter how unusual the request is. I enjoy making all of the novelty shapes, such as cars. My cakes are all baked by me, I don’t buy anything in, it’s all made on the premises by me from scratch. I also cut and sculpt them myself.
“My favourite part of the job is when a customer comes to pick up the cake and their face just lights ups. It’s lovely when customers call up to say thank you, it makes it all worth it.
“Chocolate cake is still one of the most popular flavours and my Bakewell sponge cake is also a best seller. If you love a Cherry Bakewell, you love the Bakewell sponge flavour.
“I’ve made cakes for weddings on television as well. I made Frank and Sheila’s wedding cake on Shameless, as well as Karen’s christening cake. I also did a wedding cake for Cutting It and Born and Bred. I was even asked to make some bits of icing to look like drugs for Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. I didn’t even know what they looked like so that had to show me a photo or what they wanted!.”
Despite the economic downturn in recent years, Joanne’s business has stayed busy and now she is offering a new service for cake lovers:
“I’ve started running cake modelling and basic covering classes. It’s for anyone who wants to learn how to create lovely cakes, whether they’re beginners or they want to improve they’re skills.”
The next two sessions are on December 6 and December 7.For more information Joanne’s cakes and classes go to: www.chorleycakecentre.com
