Burglars smashed their way into a family home and stole thousands of pounds in cash and possessions.

The incident happened at a home in Leyland Lane, Leyland, at around 8.40pm on Tuesday.

The homeowners were out but an alarm at the home alerted police following the break in, meaning the offenders searched through the house and made their escape in less than 15 minutes.

The detached property was locked up and it is believed a rear window was smashed.

They stole a safe containing several thousand pounds worth of cash, including Hong Kong dollars, US dollars and Euros.

Also taken was a passport, driving licence, chequebooks and a hunting knife.

Police are today appealing for anyone with any information about the incident to come forward.

Anyone with information should call Leyland police on the new 101 number.
