Solicitor loses cancer battle at home in France

A well-known former Chorley solicitor has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 68.

Tributes have been paid to David Thomasson, who died at his French home in Brittany on Sunday.

The former solicitor practiced law for more than 35 years in Chorley and owned his own firm David Thomasson and Co, in St Thomas's Road.

David's daughter Louise Pearson, who has followed in her dad's footsteps and also practices as a solicitor in the town, said: "My dad was well-known and well-respected and people will remember him for his dry sense of humour.

"He was widely known in the community for the job he did and for his empathy with the people of Chorley. He specialised in criminal and family law and he still has many friends and contacts in Chorley."

Speaking of her dad's illness, Louise added: "My dad has been looked after with a great deal of love and tenderness over the past five years by his wife Eileen who cared for him after he was initially diagnosed with throat cancer and then suffered a stroke.

"He was diagnosed with lung cancer this summer and he seemed to be doing well, but deteriorated very quickly. He died peacefully on Sunday at his home in Brittany.

"My dad loved France and the French way of life and he moved to Brittany 10 years ago after owning a house there for many years. He and Eileen were very happy and settled there and had made several good friends.

"He was also very close to his step-daughter Louise who lives in Adlington with her fiance."

David, who lived in Willow Close, Adlington, before retiring to France, was also an animal lover and his family are due to scatter his ashes close to the grave of his beloved dog Churchill. His cremation is due to take place this week in Brittany.
