Tales from Down under, December 3
Chorley-based cricket star Luis Reece is currently playing for Sunshine Coast Scorchers in Australia and is sending back weekly reports of his adventures...
From speaking to some friends back home I understand the temperatures in Chorley dipped to minus 7C on Sunday night.
Suffice it to say it's a lot hotter here in Brisbane but unfortunately the form of my club team Sunshine Coast Scorchers and my own has cooled in recent weeks.
After a bad weekend last week we were determined to put it right on Saturday in our latest match against a team called Beenleigh.
We batted first after winning the toss but lost a wicket to the second ball so I came to the crease determined to play some shots and try and get myself back into form.
However after playing a straight drive for four I was a bit unlucky to be given out caught behind for 7.
That left the score at 20-2 and we were rolled out for 150 in just two sessions.
The boys were distraught with yet another poor batting performance but we determined to put things right with the ball.
Unfortuantely we came up against a batsman called Lee Carseldine, who is on the top of his game.
He's just made his highest first class score of 152 for Queensland against South Australia, who responded with a knock of 132 from Netherfield's pro last season Callum Ferguson.
In the game against us Carseldine survived a close lbw early on and a caught behind on 63.
My bowling spell saw me go for 23 runs off four overs – with two dropped catches in the slips.
They closed on 160-6 – with Carseldine undefeated with a hundred to his name.
The following week saw us in the field again, we eventually managed to bowl them out for 240.
Our batters were set to try and bat for the rest of the day and avoid an outright defeat.
However things didn't go well when we lost two quick wickets before lunch as I was stranded not out on nought after 28 balls!
I didn't last long after lunch when a short ball didn't bounce and I was out plumb lbw.
We were all out for 110 and they knocked off their target for the loss of just one wicket.
The one day game followed on the Sunday against Gold Coast.
I took 1-40 off 10 overs as they closed on a competitive 240.
In reply we subsided from 70 for none after 13, to 90 for five when I came to the crease.
Once again my poor form continued as I was lbw for one and we were all out for 130.
It was another bad weekend and things need to change – and quick!
