Tenancy deposits to be protected under new scheme

A new scheme to protect tenancy deposits starts this month.

The Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) will ensure landlords place the money you give them in one of two protected schemes within two weeks.

The scheme also offers you a service in case there's a dispute once your tenancy agreement comes to an end.

The changes are fixed by new laws and the Consumer Champion welcomes the scheme as a victory for tenants' rights.

Mike Stimpson, chairman of the National Federation of Residential Landlords (NFRL), said: "Good landlords do not support landlords who break the law.

"We encourage landlords to make sure they are aware of the legal requirements of tenancy deposit protection."
