Families will be ringing in Christmas in style this year with a packed programme of free events taking place at Leyland’s annual lights switch-on this Friday, November 30.

There will be live street entertainment on Hough Lane, a Santa’s grotto, children’s fun activities, and late-night opening at Leyland Market and various shops.

The festive fun will run into the evening with live music by local performers playing at venues across the town, and there will also be free parking in the town centre from 3pm.

Coun Phil Smith, South Ribble Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, leisure and healthy communities, said: “Christmas is always a magical time of year, but what makes this year even more special is that groups from across the community have worked together to put on this great event for the people of Leyland and the surrounding area.”

It will be a brighter Christmas in Leyland this year too, with more festive lights on display in Hough Lane and on the Leyland Clock roundabout, provided by the Leyland My Neighbourhood Forum.

The festive activities begin at 3.30pm with Santa’s grotto at the United Reformed Church on Hough Lane, hosted by Scouts and Guides.

School choirs will sing Christmas carols and local artists, including the Broughton Hand Bell Ringers and various dance troupes, will take to a special stage on the high street.

At 6.30pm, there will be a Christingle service held at the United Reformed Church and singers will perform to the crowds outside.

The Christmas tree lights will be switched on at 7.30pm, and from 8pm until 11pm, there will be live music at a host of venues around Leyland.

A group called Groupo SambArifq will also perform near the Leyland Cross.

It’s similar to the summer’s Leyland Live music festival, and has once again been organised by Penwortham drummer Nigel Stewart.

Coun Smith added: “I hope everyone wraps up warm and makes the effort to come and celebrate Christmas in Leyland.

“Not only will they be supporting their town centre, but with children’s activities in the afternoon and live music in the evening, they will have a really great time to help them get into the festive spirit.”
