Firefighters deal with van fire on hard shoulder

A fire in a van on the hard shoulder of the M6 caused long tailbacks during today’s morning rush hour.

The blaze broke out around 8.45am as the vehicle was on the northbound carriageway between junction 31 at Samlesbury and the junction 31A exit for Fulwood.

Firefighters used a hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze in the engine compartment and used a thermal imaging camera to check the flames were out.

But with four lanes of motorway already busy with heavy commuter traffic, problems backed up to Bamber Bridge.
