UPDATE: A van driver who ‘died at the wheel’ has been named

The 81-year-old man who police say ‘died at the wheel’ due to an alleged ‘medical incident’ has been named as David Hardman, from Preston.

The man was driving a Volkswagen van and was involved in a collision with a Volkswagen Up on Leyland Way just before 5pm on Wednesday 11 November.

After the collision the van then mounted the grass verge before colliding with a lamppost.

The driver of the van was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and Leyland Way outside the Best Western hotel and the M6 motorway Junction 28 exit slip road was closed for two hours.

PS James Power from the Road Policing Unit said: “This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly died and my thoughts remain with the family and friends of Mr Hardman.

“We are still trying to establish how this collision occurred and if anyone has any information that could assist with our enquiries then please contact us.”
