Tributes have been paid to the club president of Coppull United, who died in the early hours of this morning (June 7).

Bert Wilkinson, died aged 73, the club has announced.

Bert Wilkinson achieved his dream in 2015 as his beloved Coppull United won the Lancashire Amateur Shield under manager David Haughton.

Bert, known as ‘Mr Coppull United’ by many, lived in the area for most of his life.

A spokesman for the club said Bert “put his heart and soul into the club”, which plays in the West Lancashire League Premier Division.
He said: “Bert Wilkinson achieved his dream in 2015 as his beloved Coppull United won the Lancashire Amateur Shield under manager David Haughton.”

Richard Wilson, club chairman, has known Bert for the past 20 years through the club.

He described Bert as a “lovely man who did everything for the club”.

Richard said: “We’re all devastated.

“We all knew he was ill but I think we all just felt like he was going to be there forever.

“It is strange because he has always been there for all of us.

“It’s a really sad day for the whole village and community, as well as the club.

“He was well liked and well respected - he was just a good man all round.

“We are all heartbroken for him and his family.”

A spokesman for the club gave deepest condolences to Bert’s children, Paul and Joanne, and the rest of the family.

Bert was originally from Standish, Wigan, but later moved to Coppull with his wife Pauline, who sadly died in March.

Flowers and tributes are welcome to be left at the club in memory of Bert.

Tributes have also been posted on social media.

Nicolla Moran wrote: “Hope you’re resting easy with your Pauline now Burt. Love to Joanne, Paul and all your family and friends. It was a pleasure helping you, and you’ll be missed. Lots of love the whole team at Home Angels, Chorley.”

Becky Aspinall commented: “It was an absolute pleasure working with you Bert, both you and Pauline welcomed us into your home and lives. Words can’t describe how much you’ll be missed. Lots of love to Joanne, Paul and family.”

Harry Bullough said: “RIP Bert.”
