A man and a woman who died after a road accident in Lancashire have been named.
Stephen Rigbye, 38, of Scarisbrick, and his partner and passenger Agnes Parkinson, 40, of Mawdesley, were fatally injured when a black BMW 320 lost control on a bend near Mawdesley and struck a wall. The emergency services were called to Bannister Lane, Hilldale, at 7.15am yesterday after a passer-by found the car on its roof.
It has since emerged the crash may have happened anytime between midnight and 5am.
One local resident, who did not want to be identified, said: “This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to the families of the two victims.
“I have no idea what happened in this instance but we have had problems round here with cars going too fast.”
Another said: “We have heard that the accident might have happened as early as 1am but it is such a remote area that it was only discovered at first light. It’s desperately sad.”
Sgt Alan Baron, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “Sadly this collision has cost two people their lives and I would appeal to witnesses to contact 101.”
