A young woman was taken to hospital after a serious sexual assault at Leyland railway station over the weekend.

British Transport Police cordoned off the entrance and car park of the station while forensic officers carried out a detailed search.

The alleged attack happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. The 21-year-old victim was treated in hospital and later released.

Officers revealed an 18-year-old man had been arrested and was being questioned.

A police spokesman said: “British Transport Police officers have been at Leyland Railway Station investigating a report of a serious sexual assault.

“Police were called shortly after 1am on Saturday and an 18-year-old man has been arrested and is in custody.

“An area of the station was cordoned off and police have carried out searches and are interviewing witnesses.

“The 21-year-old victim was taken to hospital and subsequently discharged. Enquiries are continuing.”
