A new Tesco store in Leyland is set to be built and ready to open by the end of Spring next year, it has been revealed.

The site on the corner of Canberra Road and Turpin Green Lane in the town centre, which used to be a service station, is set to become a Tesco Express shop.

Plans have this month been submitted for an ATM machine at the site.

Doug Wilson, Tesco corporate affairs manager, said: “We are progressing with the scheme and have an application running to allow us to install a cash machine at the new store, as this is a service our customers expect to see in our stores.

“The team is preparing to start on the site towards the end of this year and we hope to have the store open in late Spring 2013.”

There has been widespread opposition to proposals for the convenience store by members of the public, who are worried about increased traffic in the area, and the shop overlooking their front gardens and houses.
