A former Leyland Netball Club star is hoping her success in a national competition will be the springboard for further sporting glory.
Joanne Walker recently left the club where she has been playing for five years to take up a scholarship at Leeds University to challenge herself with Super League giants Leeds Carnegie.

The 19-year-old has just come second in the Daily Telegraph 'School Matters Awards 2008' after helping Cardinal Newman College to win three national titles.

She said: "It has been an amazing year for me and getting to meet all the Olympic stars at the awards ceremony was great.

"I really enjoyed meeting the Olympic gold medalist Christine Ohuruogo who used to be a netball player before she took up athletics. I want to keep on doing well and my goal for this year is to secure a regular place in the senior team. I would someday like to compete at the Olympics depending on whether it is one of the selected sports to be added by the host nation for 2012."
