Bamber Bridge 1 Cammell Laird 0

Bamber Bridge made it two out or two in the Northern Premier League with a 1-0 win against a resilient Cammell Laird at Irongate on Saturday.

There was little to choose between the sides in the first-half with chances at a premium.

Things were very even in the first 45 minutes but there was little goalmouth action to stimulate a poor Irongate attendance of 156.

Both sides strove hard to create openings but each defence proved too strong against impotent forwards.

The second-half saw Bamber Bridge in control of things but there appeared little chance of them breaking down the determined the Lairds' defence until the introduction of Kevin Towey in the 58th minute.

Towey livened things up for the home side and it was his inventiveness that gave Brig the breakthrough they had been so eagerly searching for in the 72nd minute.

He chased and won a loose ball deep on the right wing when the venture looked a forlorn hope.

Towey somehow cracked over an unlikely cross which was met at full stretch by Chris Thompson, whose header flew past the despairing dive of Cammell Laird goalkeeper Phil Palethorpe.

The visitors attempted to make a late rally, but the home defence, marshalled so effectively by the superb Luke Atherton, easily held on for the deserved three points.

Bamber Bridge: Ben Hinchliffe, James Heywood, Martin Crowder, Luke Atherton, Tom Clarkson, Warren Beattie, Ally Waddecar (Paul Lloyd 88mins), Ashley Dunn, Neil Black (Kevin Towey 58mins), Darren Green, Chris Thompson (Neil Reynolds 79mins). Unused subs: Craig Sargeson.
