Dedicated Warriors honoured

Three officials from Leyland Warriors RL team have been recognised by receiving awards from their Lancashire rugby league peers.

One of the coaches, Phil Roberts, has been rewarded for all his efforts this season with the England Wheelchair team.

Earlier this year, Roberts was part on the World Cup-winning England side which defeated hosts Australia 44-12 in the inaugural tournament.

He was given the coach of the year title for his work with Leyland's U11 side in addition to his exploits with the RFL's wheelchair rugby elite squad.

Another of the success stories for the Warriors was Gareth Nixon being voted Young Volunteer of the Year for his work with Leyland's U13 side and Lancashire U15s.

Finally, Peter Kearns received Volunteer of the Year for his dedication and tireless effort to promote and develop rugby league in Lancashire.

In September 2008, Kearns picked up the North West Counties League Volunteer of the Year award for the eight to 12-year-old section.

Kearns has also been a Warriors U9 coach and a key figure in the offering opportunities for rugby league in the South Ribble area and Lancashire.

Press officer for the Warriors, Phil Roberts said: "We are delighted as we think this shows that we are a progressive club that wants to improve all the time.

"It is also good that we are being recognised by the Lancashire Service Area.

"We don't do this for the awards we just want to see the young players who have never played the sport develop into talented rugby stars."

The three winners face an anxious wait before discovering if they can claim the national awards in August which take place at the Challenge Cup final weekend at Wembley.
