Mark McDonnell’s Euxton Villa shared the spoils against a strong Fleetwood Hesketh outfit in the Premier Division.
After observing a minute’s silence prior to the game for club stalwart Barry Morris, who sadly passed away last week, there was a perfect start for Villa as Danny Marland coolly slotted into the back of the net.
But on the stroke of half-time, the sides were level
McCluskie lashed in a free-kick which flew past the helpless Shaun Gibbs.
Both sides exchanged further chances in the second half but it was honours even at the final whistle.
This was a fantastic game and a great advert for West Lancashire League football.
Villa kicked off the game defending the clubhouse end and it was clear from the start the tie would be end-to-end.
Marland, Byron Andrew and Dan Morris all combined to send Dan Birkby clean through on goal but his shot lacked the power to beat the goalkeeper.
Morris and Marland combined again to set up
Andrew, but his shot drifted over.
Simon Hill then shot tamely at Gibbs as both sides looked to break the deadlock.
Then after Craig Pugh miss-kicked a clearance, it fell kindly to Marland and he didn’t pass up the opportunity in giving Villa the lead.
The home side continued to be the more productive, Andrew and Morris shooting wide then Ian Billington and Richard Wilson both saw goal bound efforts bravely blocked.
As the first half came to a close, Fleetwood were awarded a contentious free-kick which McCluskie lashed past Gibbs.
Marland then missed a chance early in the second half, while Fleetwood had the better of the possession but they rarely tested Gibbs.
And Euxton could have won it but Birkby’s volley scraped the bar.
