West Lancs Division Two
LEYLAND United opened up a six point gap at the top of the league over their nearest rivals Walney Island after this fine win.
On the back of last week’s great cup victory, Leyland were forced to make changes with Danny Morris suspended and Dave McCarty withdrawing through illness.
However, these changes did not seem to make much difference as Leyland dominated the early exchanges.
Unfortunately the chances that were created were not taken and after 20 minutes Todmorden, on one of their rare forays into Leyland territory, managed to take the lead.
Robertson saved the striker’s first attempt but could do nothing as he followed up with an header.
Leyland pressed for an equaliser and it duly came when a pinpoint Ash Ball cross found the head of the “prolific” Kev Houghton .
That made it 1-1 at the interval.
Leyland struggled a little bit in the second half to get their passing game together and so Todmorden were still in this game.
Leyland finally got their reward for their persistence when Mark Woods lobbed the keeper and Ash Ball was on hand to tap into an empty net. However, Leyland couldn’t get that killer 3rd goal and had to endure one or two dodgy moments in defence before Ash Ball was dragged down in the box and Kev Houghton converted the penalty.
With only minutes left on the clock, Leyland played out the rest of the game comfortably.
It was a good three points gained with special mentions for Kev Houghton and another commanding performance from young Lee McKenna.
Leyland United: Struan Robertson, Ryan McIntyre, Rick Jones, Lee McKenna, Brett Ferguson, Mark Woods , Byron Andrew, Kevin Houghton, Mick Seddon, Ash Ball, Andy Leggett.
Leyland United will take on Whinney Hill on Saturday in the league at 3pm. It wil be played on the playing fields in Stanifield Lane.
