A season to remember for Preston North End finished in the grand manner at Wembley with a 4-0 thumping of Swindon in the League One play-off final.

And to mark the occasion, the Lancashire Evening Post has produced a glossy 84-page magazine looking back at the season just ended.

After four years in the wilderness of football’s third tier, Championship football will be back at Deepdale next season.

Derbies with Bolton, Blackburn and Burnley will whet the appetite of all Lilywhites fans, along with trips to some of soccer’s more famous outposts – Elland Road, Molineux and Loftus Road among them – which will certainly be a more enticing prospect than a visit to Gillingham on a wet Tuesday night.

It was not all wine and roses for PNE last season. A miserable first half of November, a January to forget and the last-day heartache at Colchester when only a win was needed to gain automatic promotion, meant nails were bitten going into the play-offs.

But victories home and away against Chesterfield in the semi-final set up a Wembley date with Swindon...and the rest is history.

Early strikes from Jermaine Beckford and Paul Huntington settled any PNE nerves - not that there appeared to be any - before Beckford completed his hat-trick with goals either side of the break.

And then it was party central all the way to Wembley Park tube station or back up the M6 for the Lilywhites faithful and for Simon Grayson and his promotion winners.

The Lancashire Evening Post’s sports team of Dave Seddon, Rosie Swarbrick and Craig Salmon, along with photographer Dan Martino, were with them all the way.

The LEP’s special publication ‘WINNERS’ is on sale now, priced £2.50, and is the story of Preston’s season, the highs – and the lows – and, ultimately, one special early Sunday evening when PNE painted north London white.
