United in success

Leyland United are celebrating this week after their teams became Premier Division and First Division champions.
The first team beat Penwortham Town to clinch their crown, while the reserves overcame Fulwood Garrison, and were also presented with the William Shakespeare Memorial Trophy. The team was formed at the start of the 2011 season after Leyland Red Rose, Leyland St Mary’s and Leyland FC came together.
Sponsorship manager Max James said: “It took a long time, and it was very hard work.
“There was a lot of organising with managers and chairmen, but we wanted to do it as separately, the teams weren’t really getting anywhere.
“This is a great success for the new team, and shows it was a good move after all.
“This is the highest level a Leyland team has played for about 40 or 50 years.”
Now Leyland United are applying for a place in the West Lancs League.
They are based at the BTR playing fields off Centurion Way, and with the help of Farington Parish Council, have invested around £15,000 getting the facilities up to scratch.
Max added: “We’ve worked hard on the pitch, and have also submitted planning applications for toilets and catering facilities, so we want to reach the West Lancs standards.
“We have great players and a good reputation, and there has also been a lot of interest from local businesses in sponsoring us, which is great.”
The team is now looking for more sponsors.
