Leyland CC win Northern League
There were wild scenes of celebration at Fox Lane on Saturday as darkness fell on a glorious summer's evening after both the First and Second XIs clinched their respective league titles in the Furness Building Society Northern Premier Cricket League (incorporating Readers Cricket Balls).
League chairman Norman Poole presented captain David Makinson with the Division One trophy and captain Chris Dovey with the Division Two trophy as players and supporters joined together to mark a superb achievement by the club.
The present Leyland CC was formed after Leyland and Farrington CC and Leyland Motors CC joined together in February 2007.
Leyland, who visited West Cliff to take on Preston began the day with an 11-point lead over a Barrow side, fresh from their dramatic 10 runs win at Fox Lane kept the title race alive, who were at Chorley.
Both sides were aware that showery rain was forecast for the early evening.
Leyland struggled on a slow-paced pitch and battled to 126 for 8 against Preston with Chris Parkinson (25), Henry Thompson (29 not out off 71 balls) and James Rounding (27) the major contributors.
Preston's replay never got off the ground as Leyland pro Brett Pelser continued his fine late season bowling form with 8-22.
Leyland then had an anxious wait to discover the result from Chorley where the draw secured their title success.
