Leyland cricketer in 7th heaven

Leyland all-rounder Peter Cummings is still pinching himself after taking incredible figures of 7-15 against Darwen in the Twenty20 competition.

Cummings, who has taken over from David Makinson for Twenty20 games, was in irrepressible form, including a hat-trick - as Darwen were bowled out for 95 at Fox Lane to go down by 27 runs.

His four-over spell included a sequence of four wickets in five balls with Neil Cordingley, Cris Clarke, Stuart Hampson and Kamran Anwar being the victims as Darwen slipped from 82 for 4 to 89 for 8.

Cummings, who unfortunately bagged a pair with the bat over the weekend, smashed his previous best bowling figures of 5-47.

He said: "I just put it in the right place. I bowled quite a few of them because they were trying to hit me out of the park.

"It was definitely my day. My figures could have been better if I'd not bowled three wides!"

However Leyland will require a favour from Chorley to progress to the next round of the competitions after losing the return fixture to Darwen on Friday.

Batting first Leyland reached 140-3 with Karl Cross (48), Cummings (23) and Andrew Makinson (35 off 17 balls) doing most of the damage.

In reply 16-year-old Tom Foster took three for 22 in a fiery early spell but Darwen eventually won by four wickets with 28 coming off the last two overs.

Leyland have completed their group games with three wins from four games. Darwen will draw level if they beat Chorley away on Friday. The group will then be decided on run rate.

Darwen have scored 295 runs off 47 overs (6.27) while Leyland have scored 493 off 77 (6.40).
