'Leyland can win title' - Pelser

Brett Pelser says Leyland are closing in on their first Northern League title for nearly 20 years.

Leyland go to bottom club Carnforth tomorrow with a 23-point lead at the summit and the South African batsman is confident Leyland have the belief to lift their first Championship pennant since 1991.

"It is ours to lose now, title fever is gripping Leyland," said the Springbok star.

"But Barrow, St Annes and Blackpool are making a massive challenge, so it will be a heck of a finish."

Leyland's only defeat was a one-wicket loss to St Annes last month.

Pelser said: "The scary thing is that St Annes are unbeaten, they are a super side and in any other season they would be top.

"They've been superb so farand next month's tie at Vernon Road should be a cracker."

Leyland have clocked up 14 wins this term and Pelser is still eyeing his 1,000 runs target, having posted 589.

"I'm a little disappointed with my own form with the bat lately, but the mindset of the team is superb.

"The last couple of performances have summed up what we are all about.

"A fortnight ago we went to Preston and chased down nearly 300 to win.

"And last weekend we had to battle every inch of the way at Darwen.

"It was a completely different game, a low-scoring contest and, with Dave Makinson taking 7-30, we were able to defend a total of 127.

"Right across the team the boys have delivered time and time again.

"And if we can keep our focus during the next three months, then it could well be a very special year for Leyland."
