Leyland 86-9 Preston 119

Leyland Cricket Club suffered Bank Holiday blues in their quest to keep up with the early pace-setters when Preston earned a winning draw.

David Makinson lost the toss and his opponents opted to bat first, with their opening batsman Bilad Asad playing a big role in the outcome of the game.

His 35 rallied the Preston ship after they lost the early wicket off Sajid Patel when Luis Reece claimed the first of his three victims on the day.

While the Preston wickets of Paul Mann and Adam Parker fell in quick succession, Leyland would have been confident of bowling their opponents out for a low target.

However, Lukman Vahaluwala enjoyed a patient 19 from facing 48 balls and also Jonathan McDonald's 20 turned the game in Preston's favour.

There was still time for Darren Nelson to add 17 valuable runs to the scoreline as Preston were all out for 119.

Skipper David Makinson was the pick of the bowlers with 3-24, closely

followed by Luis Reece's 3-34 and Peter Cummings 3-35 while Ameer Khan got in on the wicket-taking.

In reply, Leyland's opening batsmen struggled to deal with Asad's bowling as Karl Cross went for seven, Reece on 11 and Henry Thompson got out for a duck.

Professional Ameer Khan was the pick of the batsmen by hitting 21 from 54 balls before he became another victim of Asad.

Skipper Makinson was unbeaten on 18 runs while Peter Cummings hit 12 runs but a flurry of wickets fell and Leyland managed to get points for the losing draw.

Asad finished the match with figures of 8-29 as Leyland closed play on 86.
